Supporting Healthy Multicultural Communities: Multicultural Health Week 2010

A special toll free phone service providing people with health information in their language has begun operating as part of Multicultural Health Week (26 July – 1 August 2010).

Minister for Health, Carmel Tebbutt said the health phone lines would be in five languages – Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Korean and Vietnamese – and would operate as a pilot until August 15.

“Multicultural Health Week is a wonderful opportunity to promote the range of health services available to people whose first language may not be English.”

Also to be launched during Multicultural Health Week are two new resources. Languages of the World and Multicultural Communities in NSW is a useful resource for those working with multicultural communities and identifies the different languages and cultural diversity in NSW.

The Multicultural Health Week Services Booklet lists key contacts and organisations in NSW that work specifically with CALD groups, as well as key contacts in local councils in NSW.

NSW Government Passes Legislation to Set Up Relationships Register

The NSW Parliament has tonight passed Government legislation to create a Relationships Register making it easier for unmarried couples to access legal entitlements and prove they are in committed or de facto relationships.
“Previous laws made it difficult for couples who are in de-facto or committed relationships to prove their relationship for the purpose of accessing government services, entitlements or records.”
“The register ensures NSW is aligned with Commonwealth Government moves to remove discrimination against unmarried people in heterosexual and same-sex relationships,” he said.
“Couples who choose to register their relationship will now be provided with one document that helps prove their relationship and will be spared the frustration of constantly having to supply agencies with large amounts of paperwork.”
